With Will Smith back on the big screen this month with Men in Black III, this week we’re looking at the best of his work so far on Blu-ray. So if you’re stuck for ideas this weekend, why not try out one of the following:

I Am Legend
Arguably one of the finest performances of his career, Smith plays Dr. Robert Neville, a military scientist who finds himself alone in the world when a viral outbreak destroys its population. With his pet dog Sam as his only companion, Neville continues to work on finding a cure for the infection and dreaming of salvation from his loneliness. Bonus features on the Blu-ray include an alternate cut of the film that offers viewers a different ending, feature Cautionary Tale: The Science of ‘I Am Legend’ which examines the real-life science behind some of the film’s ideas, a look at the work of Abby the German Shepherd who stars as Sam, a feature on the weapons used by Smith and his physical training for the role.

Hitch
Starring alongside Eva Mendes, Smith returns to his comedic roots to play dashing matchmaker Alex Hitchens – a man who guarantees to help love-struck clients woo the girl of their dreams in just three dates. With countless successes under his belt he finally meets his match when he encounters Albert (Kevin James), a socially awkward accountant hopelessly in love with his socialite client (Amber Valletta), and Sara (Mendes), a tabloid columnist hot on his trail as New York’s infamous date doctor. Extras on the BD include a gag reel and features Dance Steps Made Easy, in which Smith and James examine the films laugh-out-loud dance scene, and The Dating Experts, where director Andy Tennant, Smith and several other real-life romance experts discuss the realities of dating in the 21st century.

Independence Day
One of Smith’s most popular roles to date sees him star as hotshot fighter pilot Steven in apocalyptic alien thriller Independence Day. On July 2nd, mankind awakes to news that extra terrestrials have arrived and both panic and confusion set in. Amidst the chaos, environmentalist David (Jeff Goldblum) discovers a signal embedded in a satellite system which he determines is a countdown to an attack. With the help of Steven and the office of the President (Bill Pullman), mankind must work in union to discover the secret of the aliens and save the planet from annihilation. Special features include two feature-length commentary tracks from director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, game Alien Scavenger Hunt which tasks users with locating a dozen items throughout the film, a trivia track and much more.

So what do you think of our choices? Hit the comments to tell us your favourite Will Smith movies, or tell us what else you’ll be looking forward to watching on Blu-ray this weekend.

Critics and audiences around the world can’t seem to get enough of The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble in the UK) – so the good news is that director Joss Whedon has announced that an extra 30 minutes of deleted scenes will appear on the Blu-ray Disc release.

The record-breaking superhero team-up movie, the stuff of dreams for many a comic book fan, is currently number one at box offices all over the globe. It’s been widely praised for its well-balanced combination of some of Marvel’s most famous superheroes: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury. Fans eager to see more of the team bickering, fighting and learning to work together will be delighted to hear that about 30 minutes of cut footage, said to focus particularly on Captain America as he adjusts to life in the 21st century, is set to appear on the Blu-ray.

A release is still a long way off, but it’s certainly enough to whet our appetites for what will surely be one of 2012’s biggest Blu-rays. We’ll post more information as and when it appears. You can watch Collider’s interview with Joss Whedon, where he discusses the deleted scenes, here.

The follow up to the monumentally successful 2009 outing sees Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reprise their roles as the eccentric detective and his trusty sidekick.

This time Holmes (Downey Jr.) and Watson (Law) pit their wits against criminal mastermind James Moriarty (Jared Harris) in this action packed adventure-comedy directed by Guy Ritchie.

As usual with Blu-ray Monday, you have two chances to win. For your first entry hit the tweet button at the top of this post. Then for a second entry, leave a comment on this post in response to the following question:

Ritchie’s take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s complex sleuth has been a huge hit with audiences, so this week we’d like to know who your favourite on-screen genius is and why? Does Downey Jr’s arrogant but intellectual Iron Man impress or do you prefer his Avengers co-star and scientist Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo)? Maybe you’re more intrigued by mathematical geniuses such as Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting, Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind or Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man? Or perhaps you like your geniuses evil and animated such as Will Ferrell’s Megamind, Jason Lee’s anti-superhero Syndrome in The Incredibles or Steve Carell’s Gru from Despicable Me? Either way let us know who your favourite is for a chance to win.

To make it easier for us to contact you, leave your Twitter details with your comment. We look forward to your suggestions!

Kick-Ass
Catapulting Moretz into the mainstream, her stand out role as Hit Girl in hilarious superhero movie Kick-Ass took audiences and critics by storm. Dave (played by Aaron Johnson) is an ordinary teenager and avid comic fan who decides to become a real-life superhero – despite no special powers or combat training. However, he soon becomes embroiled in a bigger fight when he meets former cop Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage) and his ruthless vigilante daughter Hit Girl (Moretz), who are intent on bringing down the city’s drug lord. Special features on the BD include BonusView video commentary, a feature length making-of documentary, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with cast and crew.

Hugo 3D
If you needed any reassurance that Hugo is not just a film for younger members of the family, you may be interested to hear the movie scooped no less than five Oscars at this year’s ceremony – including awards for visual effects, sound, art direction and cinematography. Twelve-year-old Hugo (Asa Butterfield) lives inside the walls of a Parisian train station in the 1930s. His very survival depends on anonymity, but when the enchanting Isabelle (Moretz) comes into his life, it quickly takes a dramatic twist and soon his most closely guarded secret is put at risk. Bonus features on the 3D Blu-ray include interviews with director Martin Scorsese and featurettes Shoot the Moon, The Cinemagician: Georges Méliès, The Mechanical Man at the Heart of Hugo, Big Effects – Small Scale and Sacha Baron Cohen: Role of a Lifetime.

Let Me In
Perhaps her most mature role to date, Let Me In, directed by Matt Reeves, follows the touching friendship between Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a social misfit from a broken home and his mysterious neighbour Abby, played by Moretz. Adapted beautifully from John Lindqvist’s celebrated novel, extras on the BD include an extensive interview with Reeves (who touches on the advice given to him by Steven Spielberg), interviews with the cast and crew, deleted scenes, a picture gallery and insights into the set design, make up and costumes.

So what do you think of our choices? Hit the comments to tell us your favourite movies starring Chloë Moretz, or tell us what else you’ll be looking forward to watching on Blu-ray this weekend.

Based on the original novel by American author Edgar Rice Burroughs, who also brought us Tarzan, the movie follows ex-military captain John Carter, who is mysteriously transported to Mars and involuntarily embroiled in a conflict of massive proportions between the inhabitants of the planet. The journey takes us through a beautifully imagined world where we see John Carter fight for the survival of Barsoom and its people. The film’s also notable for being the live-action debut of director Andrew Stanton, the Oscar-winning writer behind Pixar classics Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo and Wall-E.

Available in a two-disc combo pack comprising 3D and 2D Blu-ray versions of the movie, bonus features will include an innovative in-world experience that delves into the mythology of the movie through the exploration of John Carter’s journal, a fascinating making-of featurette, deleted scenes and much more.

With amazing pictures emerging from the set of Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho and Sienna Miller set to star as Tippi Hedren in The Girl later this year, this week we’re focusing on the best of Hitchcock’s work on Blu-ray. So if you’re stuck for ideas this weekend, why not try out one of the following:

Psycho
Arguably his most recognised movie, the 50th Anniversary Edition of Psycho offers fans stunning picture quality, pin sharp audio and a whole host of special features that delve inside the mind of the director. Janet Leigh stars as Marion Crane, a pretty young secretary who spends one night at the secluded Bates Motel. Shy proprietor Norman, played to perfection by Antony Perkins, is on hand as the perfect host, but his domineering mother is less welcoming. When Marion retires to her lodgings to take a quiet shower before bed, one of cinemas most iconic scenes comes to life with terrifying consequences. Bonus content includes a feature length documentary on virtually every aspect of the film’s production, a look at the new technologies employed to deliver the remastered HD experience, interviews with Martin Scorsese and John Carpenter on Hitchcock’s influence and much more.

North by Northwest
Through a case of mistaken identity, New York advertising man Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) finds himself embroiled in a web of intrigue and murder that takes him across the country to prove his innocence. Featuring many of the director’s trademark storytelling techniques and themes, the 50th Anniversary Blu-ray simply is a must-have for fans. The Blu-ray was awarded 4.5/5* by Blu-ray.com for its picture and audio quality and its special features include interviews with directors William Friedkin (The Exorcist) and Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), a feature length look at Grant’s background and acting career, a making of documentary and an audio commentary from screenwriter Ernest Lehman.

Notorious
At the end of World War II, U.S. military intelligence tasks the beautiful Alicia (Ingrid Bergman) with infiltrating a band of Germans residing in Brazil. In order to have better access to critical information she agrees to marry the ringleader and so begins a downward spiral of deceit and betrayal, leaving her trapped in the home of an enemy. Bonus content includes commentaries from film professors Rick Jewell and Drew Casper, a look at the score, audio interviews with the director, a making of documentary and a look at how Notorious has influenced the spy and espionage genre.

So what do you think of our choices? Hit the comments to tell us your favourite Hitchcock movies, or tell us what else you’ll be looking forward to watching on Blu-ray this weekend.
